The most common cardiovascular adverse events of Ionamin are tachycardia, arrhythmia, angina, hypertension, coronary insufficiency and heart pain. Less commonly, cases of stroke and cardiovascular diseases were seen in patients with anorexia.

When taking Ionamin, the CNS adverse reactions, such as insomnia, anxiety, nervousness, tremors, irritability, dizziness and headaches are observed. Sometimes, a sudden euphoria that accompanied with fatigue and depression may occur. Rarer such side effects as hallucinations and other psychotic episodes may occur.

Ionamin adverse reactions of the gastrointestinal tract manifest in the form of abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, unpleasant taste and / or dry mouth or vomiting. Furthermore, Ionamin use may cause other side effects: urinary disorders, rash, impotence, facial edema, and changes in libido.

Ionamin interaction with other medicines may cause side effects. Therefore, patients using sympathomimetics should take the drug with caution.

Reaction to insulin and oral hypoglycemic agents may differ in patients using Ionamin. Ionamin may worsen hypotensive effect of adrenergic neuron blockers, such as Guanethidine, Methyldopa and Clonidine.

Ionamin leads to increased monoamine oxidase inhibitors that may cause hypertensive crisis. Refuse from alcohol during Ionamin use, since this may cause such central nervous system disorders as delirium, dizziness, or fainting.

When using Ionamin, tricyclic antidepressants and reuptake inhibitors should be taken with caution. This interaction may cause an increase in serotonin level. Excess of this hormone in the body may cause severe panic.

Clomipramine, selective reuptake inhibitors (Fluoxetine, Sertraline, Fluvoxamine, and Paroxetine) and ergot medicines do not affect the metabolism of serotonin. However, there is a theoretical risk that the use of these drugs with Ionamin may cause diseases of the heart valves.

Application of Ionamin in combination with other medicines may cause side effects, so Ionamin is contraindicated in:

  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Severe heart diseases
  • Pulmonary artery hypertension
  • Cerebrovascular diseases
  • Hypertension of any degree
  • Tendency to mental diseases
